Clinical Research Training Fellowship

("CRTF")

Purpose:
To provide a foundation in research training for medically qualified graduates in an established research institution in the UK.

Entry requirement:
• Application should usually be after Foundation year 2, but will be before award of a CCT
• Residency requirements apply – check eligibility in General Information on Research Grants (please see section 11).

Duration of grant:
2 or 3 years, to complete an MD or PhD. Exceptionally, the BHF may allow a 2 year award to be extended by 1 year to enable conversion of an MD to a PhD.

Award may include:
• Salary of applicant
• Research consumables, directly attributable to the project, usually less than £10,000 per year

How to apply:
The application must be made by an established investigator who will be the supervisor and may be for a named student only. Please read the documents listed in Application Checklist

What to submit:
• Completed application form: Form CRTF

• Detailed research proposal and other information as listed in Application Checklist
• Add the following additional information:
  – A statement detailing the scientific techniques the candidate will be trained in
  – Full CV and career intentions of the candidate
  – The candidate’s training programme should be clearly stated with a list of skills to be acquired during the grant
  – Letter of support from the Head of Department
  – Brief CV of the supervisor(s) (2 A4 sides max)
  – Form PhD.A2 – training record for each named supervisor

Number of copies required:
12 collated copies of the application form and supporting information.

Decision process:
There are no closing dates. Please submit the application when it is ready. Receipt will be acknowledged within 1 month and we will advise you when you can expect the result. A decision will be reached by the Fellowships Committee (4 meetings a year) after it has considered external peer review reports. Allow 6 months from submission to decision.
