Alcoholic drinksDrinking more alcohol than the recommended limits can have a harmful effect on the heart.

It can cause abnormal heart rhythms, damage to the heart muscle and other diseases such as stroke, liver problems and cancer.

In Great Britain 37 per cent of men and 29 per cent of women regularly exceeded the Government's recommended level of alcohol intake. 21 per cent of men and 14 per cent of women exceeded the Government definition of heavy drinking.

Managers and professionals have a higher alcohol intake than routine and manual workers. 17 per cent of women in managerial and professional jobs regularly drink heavily compared to only 12 per cent of women in routine and manual jobs.
