Trevor Fernandes suffered his first heart
attack aged just 47, when he was in the gym. Six years later
in 2006, another heart attack struck.
Trevor’s heart was irreparably damaged and
he struggled to come to terms with his condition.
"I initially found it difficult to accept
the lifestyle changes forced on me, especially having to retire
from work. I was a very active person before, I had a very
full on job. I enjoyed my work and the immediate thing that came to
mind was 'Oh God, what’s it going to do to my work?
Trevor and his wife Jackie both found reassurance
from Kate, a BHF heart nurse.
"I was able to ask her, 'is this something that’s
normal?' Booklets from the
BHF helped me understand my illness, and my wife was the
single thing that kept me going.
"It makes you think how do people survive when they don’t have
that support?"
