Research

Thanks to years of research into the causes of heart attacks we now know that smoking, eating fatty foods and a lack of exercise make people more likely to develop heart disease. We also understand that some people inherit genes which make them more likely to be born with or develop heart problems. The BHF funds research to prevent heart disease and to diagnose and treat it when it occurs.

At the BHF we award grants to scientists throughout the UK. Some work with patients in hospitals, others work in the laboratory. We currently fund 28 BHF Professors and over 1,200 research projects, and each one will provide a piece of the giant jigsaw puzzle that is heart and circulatory disease.

Research leads to a better understanding of how diseases occur and consequently to treatments, drugs and surgical techniques that help patients and save lives.
