Well Fit!

Introduction

Well Fit! is an interactive healthy living programme, featuring a teen-style magazine and CD-ROM, which connected to yheart.net, BHF's dedicated website for young people, featuring "wicked" 3-D images, a lunchbox challenge and great prizes. The package motivates 11-12 year olds who have just started secondary school to take an active interest in their health and wellbeing to reduce their risk of becoming inactive, obese and developing heart disease in later life.

Action

BHF launched the Well Fit! campaign in schools on World Heart Day, sending an important message to teachers and policymakers about the growing problem of reduced physical activity levels in children in the UK. The aim of the campaign was to establish a long-term heart health relationship with young people.

Celebrities popular with younger audiences such as Rachel Stevens, Girls Aloud and Blazin' Squad, endorsed Well Fit! by offering advice and tips in the magazine and taking an active role in the supporting media work.

Impact

Three thousand schools took part in the campaign and to date the BHF has distributed 450,000 magazines. Teachers were very supportive of Well Fit! and 73% thought BHF should continue to target 11-12 year olds in future campaigns.

86% of parents thought about their child's health and fitness as a result of the campaign and for 26%, this translated into a behavioural change in these areas.

Next steps

The patterns and habits you develop as a child predict your risk of coronary heart disease later on, so we must continue to encourage young people to lead healthy lives.

Two special websites illustrate ways to keep young hearts healthy through cool cartoons, quizzes and games. Over 11-year-olds can play a fun "soak a smoker" game and receive free yheart temporary tattoos at www.yheart.net.

Under 11s can play heart surgeon in our Heart Operation game at our popular cbhf.net website or join the Artie Beat Club and receive a membership card, badge, stickers and four editions of Artie News each year. They also get one of Artie's five-a-day magnetic charts to stick on the fridge.
