Food Labelling Letter/email template
Below is a sample text for you to use in your
letter or email in support of our work...
To the Manager,
As a regular customer of your supermarket, I am writing to ask
how you plan to improve food labelling information on the front of
your own products.
The Food Standards Agency has recommended a food labelling
scheme which uses green, amber and red traffic light colours to
help people choose healthier products.
I believe that such a system, if brought in across all
supermarkets in the UK, would be very helpful and easy to use for
busy consumers like me.
However, many supermarkets are choosing to use an alternative
system of labelling based on the principle of Guideline Daily
Amounts, which health campaigners such as the British Heart
Foundation, feel is a more complicated and less helpful “at a
glance”.
The fact that different systems are in use also makes it less
likely that people will feel confident that they can make quick and
accurate decisions on whether a product is healthy or not.
When companies use traffic lights, people understand that red
means ‘eat as a treat’ not ‘don’t eat at all’, so why are you
afraid to put a red traffic light on a pack?
I believe that your company has an historic opportunity to
empower your customers to make healthier choices through an easy to
use colour coded system of food labelling. I would be very
interested to learn more about your labelling policy.
