My Daddy's a Scientist

Professor Newby and his familyMegan and Callum Newby's father is a scientist. Everyday he works to help beat heart disease. In celebration of Father’s Day we asked them what they think of their daddy's job.

Professor David Newby holds the title 'BHF John Wheatley Professor of Cardiology' at one of our Centres of Research Excellence at the University of Edinburgh.

My dad works an awful lot trying to get people better

His daughter, Megan, tells us about how hard her dad works.

“My dad, Dr Newby, works an awful lot trying to get people better, partly by doing loads of research. He works more than full time, which is way too much!"

Professor Newby and his team are working towards the vital aim of developing stem cell-based treatments to help repair hearts damaged by a heart attack. Professor Newby also manages to find the time to practice as a cardiologist, working directly with heart patients.

The team is busy working on an ambitious project to create new blood vessel cells from patients' own skin cells. This work is happening at our Scottish Centre for Regenerative Medicine, which was supported by our Mending Broken Hearts Appeal.

Callum

My dad is amazing at his job, he has saved hundreds of lives

Callum, Professor Newby’s son, is really proud of his dad’s work and urges everyone to support our work.

"My dad is amazing at his job, he has saved hundreds of lives. If I was you, I would really support the BHF to save even more."

Professor Newby says his kids love hearing what a difference he can make at work, thanks to our funding.

"My kids love it when I tell them that we can save people's lives on a daily basis. However, it is important to remember that many of these life-saving treatments have only been made possible by research that the BHF has funded thanks to support from the general public.”

Judging from their outfits the Newby kids have clearly given their dad’s job the seal of approval!
