It’s vital people take their statins as prescribed
New research shows statins could reduce
someone’s risk of a heart attack, even if they are at low risk of
heart disease.
At the moment, cholesterol-lowering statins are a
widely used treatment for patients who already
have - or are at high risk of - heart and circulatory disease. But
a new study, part funded by us, shows statins can also be an
effective and safe way to reduce heart attack risk in people who
are at low risk.
June Davison, our Senior Cardiac Nurse, said:
“Those who already have heart disease, or are at high risk, are
offered statins because it’s well established they help to lower
cholesterol and reduce the risk of heart
disease.
If you’re prescribed any drug, including statins, make sure you take them as directed
“This large-scale
research found even people at low risk of heart disease could
benefit from statin therapy. The findings will help to
inform policy and treatment guidelines in the
future.
“However, we’ve got another pressing
issue to tackle. Worryingly, a third of people already on
cholesterol-lowering medication fail to take it, which is why we’re
launching a campaign today, featuring
comedy legend Tommy Cooper, to remind people on heart medicines to
take them ‘just like that’.
“If you’re prescribed any drug, including
statins, make sure you take them as directed or if
you’re unhappy with them see your GP or talk to us.”
As part of our new Just Like That
campaign, radio adverts featuring recordings of Tommy Cooper will
air on national and local radio stations, while
his face and famous catchphrase ‘just like that’ will be used on
leaflets in magazines and dropped through letterboxes.
