Growing old healthily is simply not rocket science
Not smoking, drinking moderate amounts of alcohol, staying
active and eating fruit and veg could be the key to a healthier
retirement, according to new research part
funded by us.
Researchers have found that successful ageing
can be achieved by engaging in healthy behaviours
- with a greater number of healthier behaviours resulting in
greater health benefits. Successful ageing was defined in the study
as maintaining good mobility, cognitive skills and respiratory
function while having no mental health problems or chronic
diseases, such as heart and circulatory
disease.
The simple truth is that if you lead a healthy lifestyle you’ll see the benefits as you get older
Doireann Maddock,
our Senior Cardiac Nurse, said: “These findings
aren’t rocket science. The simple truth is that if
you lead a healthy lifestyle you’ll see the benefits as you get
older.
“If you want the best possible chance of
staying healthy as the years go by, avoid
smoking, don’t drink more than moderate
amounts of alcohol, and enjoy at least
two and a half hours of physical activity each week. Eating
a balanced diet that includes
plenty of fruit and veg is part of that winning
formula, too.”
