School-aged scientists win top prizes

Nicole Serzhantova, 16, from Dean's Community
High School in West Lothian beat nearly thirty entries to take
first place in our 2012 ‘Build a Heart’ competition,
winning a visit to a heart research lab for her
class.
The competition encouraged pupils to use items
from around the house to recreate a pumping heart, and was
designed to help young people understand how the heart works, and
raise awareness of heart disease
Nicole made her winning model using sponge and
plastic bottles to represent the lungs and heart. We will turn her
creation into a kit to help young people throughout the UK learn
how the heart and circulatory system works. You can help us make
this kit and more like it by donating
now.
"We encourage
and support all our students to aim high and to take advantage of
all opportunities that they encounter, and through winning this
national competition Nicole has done exactly that."
Susan Cook, Head Teacher, Deans
Community High School
Runner-up
The model that took second place came from pupils at the Vale of
Leven Academy in West Dunbartonshire. The group of 13 year old
pupils named ‘The Heart Attacks’ created a working heart out
of plastic tubs and bottles and demonstrated narrowing of the
arteries using straws.
The pupils - Chloe Madden, Rachel Gillies, Nicole
McDonald (left to right above), Rebekah Moffat and Josh
Mathieson – won a Nintendo Wii for their
school.

"The British Heart Foundation national
competition ‘Build a Heart’ was a great inter-disciplinary project,
which fits perfectly with a Curriculum for Excellence. I
