Hearty Lives
£9 million programme to tackle inequalities in heart
disease...
Where you live in the UK has a dramatic effect on your
chances of dying early from heart disease.
In some local authorities, people living in one ward can
be five times as likely to die from heart
disease as those living just half a mile
away.
We are devoting a major new £9 million programme to tackling
these inequalities in heart disease, giving those born
into these areas a greater chance of living to see their
grandchildren grow up, and better support if they do develop heart
disease.
Community needs
When it comes to tackling
heart disease, one programme does not fit all communities, so we
are working with local partners to make sure that the programmes
are available and tailored to those who need them
most.
Our community partners include:
- local authorities
- local health organisations, including Health Boards and Primary
Care Trusts
- community groups
- other charities, such as the British Red Cross
New local faces and support
Planned programmes will include:
- for patients in a former mining town
- helping people with mental illnesses to access
heart health services
- smoke-free homes to prevent children and young
people from taking up smoking
- psychological support for heart patients
- a physical activity programme to help an inner-city area
to tackle childhood obesity
- heart health education for young families in children's
centres in deprived areas
- lifestyle support for unemployed people, as
well as support for employers to set up workplace
health programmes
