Volunteers in a BHF Shop at Christmas

Free time to spare?

Christmas may seem a long way off, but the busiest time of the year for our shops is fast approaching, so we’re looking for volunteers to make a real difference.

Volunteers are essential to the success of BHF shops and play a vital part in the fight against heart disease.

Our shops have positions available to suit everyone, from selling our large range of Christmas gifts and cards to window dressing and helping with the Christmas raffle. If you’d prefer a more hands-on role, our Furniture and Electrical Stores are keen to recruit warehouse assistants, electrical function testers, furniture restorers and sales assistants.

For more information, call 0800 915 3000 or visit our volunteering page.

Know your drugs

It’s Ask Your Pharmacist Week from 5 to 12 November, and if you have cardiovascular disease you’re being urged to take advantage of the free NHS services at your local pharmacy.

If you’ve recently been prescribed a medicine for high blood pressure or a drug that reduces the risk of blood clots, such as warfarin, you can use the New Medicine Service. Or if you’re taking two or more prescribed medicines for a long-term condition, you could have a Medicines Use Review. Both services involve a chat with the pharmacist so you can ask questions about potential side effects, the best way to take your medicine and what to do if you miss a dose.

Men in particular are being encouraged to take advantage of the services, as a survey from the National Pharmacy Association showed they are less likely to seek advice from healthcare professionals.

Get your flu jab

It's not just for over-65s - anyone with a serious health condition such as heart disease is entitled to a free jab on the NHS. Flu strains are constantly changing, which is why you need a new jab every year. Ask your doctor or practice nurse about the jab as early in the season as possible.

Win a hamper!

The ever-popular BHF Christmas hamper is back! Packed with festive goodies such as tasty butter shortbread, luxurious Belgian chocolate truffles, plus other delicious foods and drinks, this beautiful wicker hamper is a wonderful one-off Christmas treat. There’s one to be won in each of our BHF shops and Furniture and Electrical Stores. All details are in store. Better still, all the winners (except those in Northern Ireland) will be entered into another draw to win £2,500 worth of holiday vouchers. Tickets are only £1, so pop into your local BHF shop and take your chance! The winners will be drawn on Saturday 22 December at 4pm.
