Hearty Lives Cookstown

Heart group

Cookstown currently has the third highest rate of early deaths from heart disease in Northern Ireland.

Hearty Lives Cookstown is a £225,000 project, working in partnership with Cookstown District Council and Northern Health & Social Care Trust

Our aim

To help reduce deaths and hospital admissions from coronary heart disease in Cookstown by:

  • working with all seven Health Care Practices in the Cookstown district area, assessing their individual needs and providing services to meet those needs
  • working in partnership with the Vion factory to address the heart health needs of their employees, identifying concerns in relation to coronary heart disease
  • working in partnership with a number of marginalised groups, in particular adults with learning disabilities, tailoring services to meet the needs of each group.

Bronagh McEldowney, BHF Northern Ireland Heart Health Educator says: "Hearty Lives Cookstown will help more people access cardiac rehabilitation which will improve the quality of life for patients with heart problems."

Success so far

Hearty Lives Cookstown recently held a successful 'health checks for farmers' event in St Mary's Primary School, Pomeroy. Farmers from the Cookstown area took the opportunity to have a check-up by qualified nurses, dietitians and healthcare workers.

We all need to take more time to look after ourselves and pay better attention to our health

The Agriculture and Rural Development Minister, Michelle Gildernew, MP, MLA paid a visit to the health checks. She said: "The health checks provided farmers, who don't often have the time to go to the doctors, with the opportunity to have their health checked without disrupting their daily routine.

"This is a great initiative by Hearty Lives Cookstown who have brought healthcare into the heart of the farming community. I hope similar initiatives can be developed in rural communities across the north."
