Hearty Lives Hull
Currently 1 in 6 deaths in
Hull are due to coronary heart disease (CHD). Premature
death rates from CHD are significantly higher in Hull
than in the rest of Yorkshire and above average for the rest
of England.
Hearty Lives Hull is our £1.5 million programme in
partnership with NHS Hull and Hull City Council.
Our aim
We want to raise awareness of heart disease,
and motivate and challenge
the population of Hull to aspire to better heart
health. We will do this through:
- creating access to a range of fun physical activity and
sports led by our community champions,
including family events
- using dance and the arts to explore health beliefs and
expectations, through a city-wide visual arts/creative writing
project, community dance and a family film
project
- promoting workplace health in small
companies
- helping unemployed groups in the community look after their
heart health
- additional lunchtime and after school learning
opportunities for secondary schools,
including healthy eating, physical activity and emergency life
support skills
More info
Local resident Monique first attended a Hearty Lives Hull
informal jogging group in March 2011, along with her daughter
Carly. She was referred to the group by the Hull Active Lifestyles
programme after giving up smoking.
Monique had no previous experience of running and began from
scratch, slowly building up her stamina week on week.
To date she has attended the East Park run in Hull over twenty
times and has used the jogging group to improve her confidence and
ability to run longer distances. Monique now runs three to four
miles every week and has attended six of the 5k runs clocking a
personal best on four occasions, improving her time by an
impressive 2 minutes and 52 seconds.
