Hearty Lives Dundee

Woman cycling in a hearty lives top

Heart disease is the biggest cause of premature death in Scotland. People in Dundee are far more likely to die from heart disease than those in many other parts of the country.

Hearty Lives Dundee is a £1.3 million programme to reduce heart disease and improve the heart health of people living in Dundee.

Working with NHS Tayside, we aim to provide services closer to the homes and communities of heart patients living in Dundee, ensuring that they receive the optimum health care, which could improve their quality of life.

Claire Fraser, BHF Scotland community development manager, says: " Hearty Lives Dundee will reach thousands of people who would not normally have access to health checks which could identify unknown risk factors."

Our aim

Our focus is to provide health checks giving information, advice and support to those who would like help in leading healthier lives and maintaining lifestyle changes. We will:

  • These booklets can be very helpful for people to refer back to if they suffer any symptoms

the Government's Keep Well health checks to people aged 40-44, so local people can take action to prevent themselves getting heart disease earlier.  An additional 4,500 people will have access to the check.
  • provide heart health checks in community settings, workplaces and job centres
  • work with Dundee services to address childhood obesity
  • extend cardiac services to heart patients in the community, so they do not have to travel to local hospitals.

The programme will make it easier for the city's people to make and maintain healthy changes to their lives

Alison Hume, lead specialist nurse for Hearty Lives Dundee says: "The opportunistic clinics are a great chance for people to come along and have some basic checks done. We take as much time as we need with people and send them out more information if necessary."

These health checks could also pick up on any risk factors such as high blood preassure and cholesterol. This will ensure local people recieve treatment earlier than they otherwise might.
