Bike Rides, UK Challenge

Saturday 31 July 2010

35, 65 or 100 Miles accross the South Downs Way

Were you tough enough?
Did you complete the miles you signed up for?

June
With 32 degree heat and a strong headwind most of the way, all riders faced an even tougher challenge than normal.  One in three didn’t make the 100 mile target and had to drop out at the 65 mile spot Devils Dyke, the 65 milers battled on to mostly finish and the 35 milers took on the intense terrain of the South Downs.

Whether you achieved your planned distance or not we hope to see you all back for another great event in 2011.

July
The 100 milers started off in typical late July weather.... drizzle and fog.  This unfortunately meant that a few riders came off early on in the ride.  Once the South Downs chalky terrain gets wet even the knobbliest of tyres struggle!  After the initial bad spell, the weather proved kinder and gave the riders a nice tailwind to help them with the hills.

One crazy rider took on those hills on a single speed bike... apparently subsequent of a drunken bet....  needless to say he made it but said he won’t be making a habit of riding without his gears next time!

A big well done to all involved, the South Downs Randonée is known to many as the toughest off-road bike ride in the UK, the equivalent of climbing Ben Nevis three times on two wheels, it certainly is a great achievement!

Now you have done the miles, collect those pennies.... It’s not too late to set up a justgiving page www.justgiving.com/justgiving.  You can even ask your company if they do a matched giving scheme – this is an easy way of adding to your sponsorship!
