Major gifts

Child holds adults handOur fight against heart disease requires long-term investment. This is why the support we receive from individuals, charitable trusts and foundations is essential.

Heart pioneers - Donors who give between £1,000 and £25,000 a year are part of our Patron’s Programme, Heart Pioneers. Your support could fund research and studentships, young people's projects, prevention and care activity or our Mending Broken Hearts appeal.

Trusts and foundations - Your gift can support a specific project or you can choose to allow us to allocate it to where the need is greatest. Whichever option you choose, we will work closely with you ensuring you are kept informed of how your gift has made a difference.

Events - We hold exciting special events throughout the year such as our Tunnel of Love party, which will be held on 29 May 2012. Click here for more information and to book your ticket.

How you can help

Glasgow appealFunding Community resuscitation – immediate action to save lives

In the UK each year around 30,000 people suffer a cardiac arrest, nearly half of which are witnessed by helpless bystanders.  Sadly, due to lack of knowledge and training, over 27,000 of these casulaties do not survive - that’s just a 10% chance of survival.

We're reaching out to local communities and our Community Resuscitation Technicians provide training sessions in Emergency Life Saving skills (ELS) with the use of defibrillators.

  • A gift of £14,000 will provide 10 mobile heart defibrillators.
  • A gift of £31,000 will fund a Community Resuscitation Technician for a year to work across the UK and deliver vital training and information.
  • A transformational gift of £94,000 will cover the full costs of a technician and equipment for 3 years, providing lifesaving knowledge to support larger numbers of new Community First Responders.

BHF technicianFunding innovation through leadership and excellence - Research Fellows & Chairs

Dr Vivek Muthurangu is a BHF funded Research Fellow leading the Vascular Imaging and Physics Group at UCL. He and his team are working on MRI technologies and developing  new ways to image the heart in real-time, enabling children with congenital heart disease to be assessed in a safer and less distressing environment.

  • A gift of £67,000 will fund the costs of a BHF Research Fellow and their experimental equipment for an entire year, enabling them to carry out their invaluable research.
  • A gift of £200,000 will support one of our Research Fellows to advance their work over three years making it possible to affect real change in our lifetime, ending the suffering of those living with heart disease.

Dish scopeFunding pioneering breakthroughs for the future - PHD students

Patricia Gyambibi-Barnett is a PHD student at King’s College London exploring the role that stem cells play in forming new, healthy blood cells.  Patricia’s research aims to help the team to advance current technologies making them more efficient, bringing us a step closer to our ultimate goal of mending broken hearts. This year, we will support the work and research of more than 200 PHD students across the UK:

  • A gift of £10,000 will fund the full costs of equipment and research materials used by one of our PHD students each year.
  • £34,000 will fund the salary and University fees, for one of our PHD research students for a year.
  • A long-term investment of £130,000 in the work of one of our Researchers will fund their work in its entirety, providing the stability of 3 years funding as well as the vital resources and materials.
