Red for Heart Photography Competition

We are delighted to announce the winners, runners up and highly commended images from our third annual Red for Heart Photography competition which raises vital funds so we can continue our life-saving work.

Winners

Adult winner

We're late, we're late, for a very important date by Clare Park | Title by Buz Williams

“The heart is a symbol for life and love. It is full of mystery and complicated configurations. Parkinson's disease can affect nerves in the heart as well as the central nervous system.

"Buz who has had Parkinson’s for 30 years has great courage and a strength of heart that extends outward to all who look at the photographs we have made over 18 years.”

Student winner

Red River by Mike South

“The image is an aerial view of salt marsh in San Francisco Bay. The rivers are tinted a deep red by the presence of algae which thrive in the high salinity environment.

"I think the image resembles the flow of blood in the human body and symbolises the heart's role in maintaining life under the harshest conditions.”

Junior winner

The Science of Impermanency by Delphine Percy-Rouhaud

“The Heart is anger. Heart is passion. Heart is acceptance. Heart is love.

"She is afflicted by racism. She feels she has to 'fit in'. The mask could be a metaphor for pains, self-inflicted, to ease the hurt. But she knows she isn't being true to herself, and uses the red lipstick as an impermanent strike against a permanent issue.”

Runners Up

Adult runner up

Beside the Sea by Nick Dawe

“I like to photograph people having fun and enjoying themselves when going about their everyday activities, whether it is work or leisure related. I am also attracted to people's interaction with their environment and like to celebrate this affinity in a positive way.”

Student runner up

The Mechanic by Philip Ryan

“A mechanic can be seen with his arm reaching into an engine but it is unclear whether he is able to diagnose or fix the problem. In this image the vehicle is a metaphor for the human body whilst the engine represents its heart.”

Junior runner up

Paint by Lucy Ireland

“The image represents new life and hope. The paint tube representing the heart and the paint being hope. The paint tube is useless without the paint, much like a heart is useless without hope and love.

"The British Heart Foundation has given people hope and a new chance to love and paint their future once again.”

About our photography competition

The competition closed in early January and the standard this year was phenomenal. We received over 600 fantastic images. There was only one rule - the colour red was to be incorporated into the photo. Entrants were encouraged to show “what heart means to you”.

The competition raised over £2,000 for our Red for Heart campaign - raising vital funds to help us continue our life-saving work.
