Soulless Stars Cascade
Silkscreen Print
Image Size: 585 X 750 mm
Paper Size: 585 X 750 mm
John Hoyland's use of
dazzling clashing colours creates a tension that
instantly draws the viewer into Soulless Stars Cascade.
Somehow Hoyland brings a sense of order and
harmony from what is at first glance a
chaotic composition.
The sense of the triumph of
cohesion over chaos is symbolic of the emotional rollercoaster of
suffering and then recovering from heart disease. Soulless
Stars Cascade conveys a real depth of
feeling, reaching out for answers in a situation where
there is no certainty.

About the artist
John Hoyland has been called ‘Europe’s answer to
Mark Rothko’ and is regarded as the leading abstract artist of his
generation. From the early 1960s he achieved international
recognition for a body of work that eliminates literal depiction of
the observed world. His art uses shape, colour and, later, texture
and the movement of paint to evoke a world of emotion and
imagination.
Hoyland was born in Sheffield and was educated
at Leighton Park School, before going onto study at Sheffield
School of Art and the Royal Academy Schools. He was elected to the
Royal Academy in 1991 and was appointed Professor of the Royal
Academy Schools in 1999.
Retrospectives of his paintings have been held
at the Serpentine Gallery (1979), the Royal Academy (1999) and Tate
St Ives (2006). He won the 1982 John Moores Painting Prize. His
works are held in many public and private collections including the
Tate.
John Hoyland sadly passed away on 31 July
2011. He kindly created and donated this amazing work of art in aid
of the Mending Broken Hearts
Appeal and we are extremely grateful for his
support.
