Red for Heart Photography Competition Results
Back in October, we launched our first annual Red for
Heart photography competition. There was only one rule -
the colour red must be incorporated into the photo. Entrants
were encouraged to show “what heart means to you”. We
received over 300 fantastic images and raised over £1,400
to help fund our life-saving work.
Featured here are the winners and runners up
from each category (adult, student and junior). You can see
the full gallery of all entries and
find out more about our judging
day. We have also announed the winners of
our Reflections of Research
competition for scientific images from heart research. You
can view all these winning and finalist images at the free
National Heart Month exhibition on the landscape area by the London
Eye from 1 - 15 Feb 2010.
Winner of the Adult category
‘The Swimmer’ by David Jenkins

“The idea of the image was to set the strength of the colour
red against a muted minimal backdrop to draw on themes of
tranquillity and solitude. This in turn is linked metaphorically to
feelings of isolation when battling personal health issues; the
isolation is represented by the swimmer, though the beauty of life
is still present.” David Jenkins
“This is an incredible photograph; you
really empathise with the man about to take the plunge into the ice
cold pool! Dave’s composition is strong and striking in colour with
the red against the snow white background. It has a natural feel
and is really well taken.”

Winner of the Student category
‘Pulse’ by Tom Price (aged 24)

“In this image, the heart is represented
by a powerful beam of light which punctures the surrounding
darkness. Surrounding this are swirling images that clamour for the
light and attention of the piercing gaze of the 'heart' “. Tom
Price
“This was a strong category, but Tom’s photograph really stood out.
The photo is experimental with the use of light, which does not
feel contrived and has interesting composition.”

Winner of the Junior category
‘Leap for Life’ by Beanie Trant (aged 14)

“I feel that this photo shows young people
keeping fit and healthy and having fun outside. It shows how
important friendship is and that everyone needs to help look after
each other. This helps promote healthy hearts because
everyone is wearing something red to enhance the idea of “Red for
Heart”. Beanie Trant
“This is a technically strong image
– using a panoramic format, capturing the perfect moment and the
fun nature of the competition. We hope that Beanie continues with
her photography; she has natural talent." John Angerson, Judge
and Photographer.
Runner up of the Adult category
‘Wearing Red and Purple’ by Chris Mole
“This was taken from the Festival Hall in London and
shows a group outing based on the idea of wearing red & purple
(from the famous poem by Jenny Joseph).
"When I am an old woman, I shall wear purple - With a red hat which
doesn't go…"
Chris Mole
Runner up of the Student category
‘Heart-to-heart Over a Cuppa’ by Ottilie Simpson (Aged 18)
“I like to believe it's the
'small' things in life that enrich your heart and senses: a coat of
nail varnish to make you feel a little bit more pretty; a
heart-to-heart over a cup of tea with a good friend; or a
delicious, juicy strawberry. Every day, these simple kind of
pleasures capture my heart and make life worth
living.”
Ottilie Simpson
Runner up of the Junior category
‘Heart’ by Samantha Durrant (Aged 15)
“I draw you this heart to give you my heart”
Without the help of a number of organisations this competition
wouldn't have been possible. Thank
you.
