How junk food companies target your kids

Television

The BHF has been fighting to ban all junk food advertising on TV before 9pm. Since 2007, junk food advertising around children’s programmes has been restricted. But parents know that kids’ shows are not the only programmes their children watch. Millions of children watch programmes like The X-Factor and Coronation Street every night. These programmes are not covered by the new restrictions, so junk food marketers can still target your kids through TV.

Which? research carried out in September 2007 showed that unhealthy products such as Frosties, Mars Planets, Kinder Bueno, Milky Way, Smarties and Twix were still being advertised during 8 of the 10 top programmes watched by the under 10s because they are not covered by the new rules.
