Join the Heart Pioneers

Could you be that 1 in 100?

Research

Our pioneering research breakthroughs have saved many thousands of lives and led to innovations in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of heart disease.

Yet, while research has significantly helped to reduce the death rate, heart and circulatory disease is still the single biggest killer in the UK.

We are looking for 100 people willing to give at least £1,000 a year to be at the forefront of our research.

By becoming 1 in 100, your membership will help to support the cost of our research programmes currently in place across the UK, and the 30 British Heart Foundation Research Professors conducting them.

Our first Professor to join the Heart Pioneer scheme is Professor John Deanfield, who is conducting a study on genetic and environmental interaction on vascular function in children under ten.

As a Heart Pioneer, you could help Professor Deanfield identify that heart disease begins early in life and, more importantly, is controllable before it becomes a clinical problem later on.

He says: "I used to research adult cardiology, now I study adult disease in children. My ambition is to get every paediatric cardiologist doing the same, and investing in children’s heart health today."

Representing us at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, University of Birmingham, is Professor Michael Frenneaux.

Professor Frenneaux is an eminent clinical cardiologist who is currently working on a new treatment for heart failure based around the drug perhexiline.

He says: "We have seen terrific improvements in heart failure patients treated with perhexiline. Many who could walk a few metres are now able to lead a good quality life, and can walk up a couple of flights of stairs without difficulty."

Professor Frenneaux is also researching the links between heart disease, depression, and the naturally produced steroid hormone, cortisol.
