Physical fitness and statins are a winning combination
Combining statin treatment with better fitness
may do more to ward off death than either intervention alone,
according to researchers.
In a study of over 10,000 people with high
blood fat or cholesterol levels, death
rates were found to be lowest for people who were
physically fit as well as taking statins.
Our Senior Cardiac Nurse, Natasha
Stewart, said: “Both statins and exercise can help combat high blood cholesterol
levels and look after your heart.
“However, this research shows that the two
together can provide a winning combination to
further improve your heart health, with higher intensity exercise
possibly offering more protection.
“If you have high cholesterol, make sure you
speak to your doctor about the best treatment
regime to keep your heart healthy.”
This research was published in The Lancet.
