Family eating
To look after their heart and stay healthy, children need to eat
a balanced diet. This must include at least 5
portions of fruit or vegetables every
day. A portion is 80g for adults, but for children, think
of it as about a handful for the person who is going to eat it. So
a portion for a 3 year old is smaller than a portion for a 12 year
old.
Getting kids interested in fruit and veg
Children can be fussy, so sometimes you have
to do a bit of work to get them interested. Try making sure that
every time they eat, their meal includes fruit or veg.
Getting 5 a day
Take up a few of these fruit and veg ideas and
your child will reach their 5 a day in no time.
- Peel oranges or bananas and put them on top
of everyone’s cereal at breakfast
- Give children apples or other fruit for a
morning snack
- Put salad in with sandwich filling, and give
them fresh goodies like carrot sticks in a packed lunch
- Make sure children have satsumas or dried
fruit like raisins for their afternoon break
- Serve vegetables with every meal at home
- Get children to help you make a fruit salad
for pudding
- Have a glass of pure, unsweetened fruit juice
every day.
