About the BHF
BHF stands for British Heart
Foundation. We're a charity that believes that
everyone should be able to grow old without suffering from heart
disease.
The money that the BHF raises helps prevent heart disease and
helps people who already have it.
Here's what we do:
- research
- raise money
- get special nurses to help people with heart
disease
- teach people how to look after their
hearts.
We also teach people how to save lives - this is called emergency life support.
How did it all begin?
The BHF was started in 1961 by a group of
doctors. They wanted to raise money to study new ways of
preventing and treating heart disease.
Are things any better now?
Since 1961, there have been huge improvements. Heart surgery is
now common, and doctors use clever techniques such as keyhole
surgery.
Many of today's drugs and treatments might never have been
possible without the BHF.
