"I like explaining things to people and seeing them go away with their minds a bit more at rest, because they have a better understanding of their condition."

So much of our work at the BHF is about raising standards of cardiac care and support in all parts of the country. That means training, supporting and empowering the BHF Heart Nurses who deliver care at the front line.
'Everyday heroes'
These are the everyday heroes who make a difference to thousands of people's lives - but they don't always get the credit they deserve. This year, we wanted to put that right. Our Nurse Excellence Rewards are designed to give credit to outstanding performers and inspire the next generation of cardiac nurses.
Over 300 of our BHF Heart Nurses attended the first awards night in October, turning it into a real celebration.
The star of the show was Anne White, who scooped the Outstanding Performance award. Anne was recently appointed BHF Cardiac Genetic Nurse at Papworth Hospital, Cambridgeshire, the latest in a long line of career achievements that include helping to establish an innovative cardiac rehabilitation service and local patient support group.
'Sharing knowledge'
One of the great things about Anne's work is the way she shares her knowledge with others, whether it's through training GPs, nurses and members of the public, or contributing to the national guidelines for heart patient care, which are now used in clinical practice.
We are now funding and supporting over 400 BHF Heart Nurses nationwide, who provide expert cardiac care for patients in their homes and in hospital.
We are determined to continue achieving the highest possible standards of heart patient care and support, and it's people like Anne White who will make it happen.
This is just the first year in what we hope will be a long-running annual event, designed to inspire the everyday heroes of the future.
