With South Asian communities at such a high risk of cardiovascular disease it's vital that the BHF finds new ways to raise heart health awareness within these communities, and Melas are really helping us get the messages across.
From the Sanskrit word for 'gathering', Melas are festivals that celebrate the creativity and culture of South Asians. They offer an exciting mix of music, dance, visual arts, crafts, and a wide variety of shopping, services and multi-ethnic foods. Attracting large crowds, and often running for several days, Melas are a great opportunity for us to raise awareness of our all-important work, and the simple lifestyle changes that South Asians can make to help their hearts.
In 2007, we used Melas to publicise Chest Pain Awareness Day, which supported the relaunch of Doubt Kills, the BHF campaign to encourage people to dial 999 if they experience chest pain.
In 2008, we'll be extending activities, including risk assessment, at Melas across the UK. And as these festivals become more multi-cultural, we'll be spreading our messages to an even wider audience. See you at the Mela!
The BHF produces a variety of booklets and DVDs on heart health issues (some are available in several South Asian languages). Please visit bhf.org.uk/publications
