Living with a heart condition can be hard, but it's doubly challenging if you're going through the anxieties of being a teenager. In 2007 the BHF launched a dedicated website where young people with heart problems could meet up and support each other. meet@teenheart is an online community, with a secure members area, where these teenagers can get the information and confidential advice they need in a way that's designed for them - not their parents. Most importantly, it's a place where they can talk and share experiences with others of their own age who really understand.
meet@teenheart is accessed via the BHF's revamped yheart website for young people, which relaunched in November 2007. There's healthy lifestyle information, online games, competitions, and animated diagrams and info sheets on how hearts can go wrong. Teenagers were involved right at the start, from the initial conference at Center Parcs in 2006, and some are still on the editorial board. Nurse Stephanie Lillie, BHF Heart Health Coordinator, told us: "They decided what should go on the site and worked closely with the BHF and the design agency as the website was being built."
Pav Kang, told us: "It's really good for me because I get to meet new people all the time. And I can find out what other people like me are going through and what can be done for them." In just a few months, yheart received over 53,000 hits, and, with over 5,400 visits by March 2008, meet@teenheart is really bringing youngsters with heart conditions together.
We're holding a further conference in October 2008 to help the teenagers keep the website relevant, personal and up-to-date. It'll be a fun-packed weekend - no parents allowed! If you're a teenager with a heart condition, visit yheart.net/meet
