Heart Support Groups (HSGs) are people living with heart disease who come together for mutual support. They bring hope and a healthier lifestyle to tens of thousands of heart patients and carers across the country.
As John Palmer of Fishguard Cardiac Rehabilitation Group says: "You feel at rock bottom, but the group helps you regain your confidence and self-esteem."
The 290 BHF-affiliated HSGs in England and Wales range from a dozen members to over 200. Although the aims of HSGs are to exercise, socialise and support each other, many also promote heart health in their communities. The Bolton Cardiac Support Group, for example, has close ties to a local school, which helps them spread the message to children.
In 2008, the BHF is organising Network Events to help groups share experiences and ideas for fundraising and publicity. And with cardiac rehabilitation as a key element of HSG activity, many groups have been involved in our cardiac rehabilitation campaign to make this vital service available to everyone who needs it.
