Chest pain awareness day

The BHF's Doubt Kills campaign, which urged people to call 999 if they experienced chest pain, has already saved lives - you can hear one survivor's story of how making the call saved his life on a podcast at bhf.org.uk/podcasts. It's a crucial message, because every minute that someone waits before they call 999 reduces their chance of survival.

To support the campaign's second phase and prevent more tragic and unnecessary deaths, the BHF staged Chest Pain Awareness Day in July 2007. We re-ran our iconic billboard advertisement with the slogan 'A chest pain is your body saying call 999'. And, in the run up to the Day, we leafleted three million homes and GP practices, and ran a poster and leaflet campaign in our Shops and ads in national newspapers and magazines.

Former Coronation Street star, Ray Fearon, who lost his dad to a heart attack, said: "Dad's heart attack came out of the blue. He would've just put it down to indigestion and not wanted to make a fuss..., but when it's chest pain, it could be serious. You shouldn't feel guilty about calling 999 - it could save your life."
