The British Heart Foundation in Northern Ireland
A major step forward in helping people with heart problems in Northern Ireland came in March 2006 with funding for a third echocardiography (echo) technician in Belfast. Echo is one of the most effective ways to diagnose heart problems, by providing an ultrasound picture that reveals a great deal about a person’s heart. The technique is most commonly used to diagnose conditions such as heart failure, but because the scan is quick, reliable and painless, it is especially valuable for investigating heart problems in babies and young children.

Lives are also being saved through the Heartstart UK scheme, which is coordinated by the BHF and teaches members of the public what to do in a life-threatening emergency. The scheme has been highly successful in schools and in 2005 we were proud to celebrate Heartstart UK’s 1,000th school affiliation in Coleraine.

2005/06 was a great year for fundraising in Northern Ireland. Junior Golf raised over £3,880 with enthusiastic young golfers turning out in 32 teams, army cadets drumming up £4,000 over the year, and Limavady Branch raising over £5,000 through a whole range of events including a coffee party, a fashion show, and collections. A special thank you goes out to the many schools and school children who have been so wonderfully supportive through Jump Rope for Heart.
