Young lifesavers
- In the UK someone has a heart attack every two minutes.
- Almost 1.2 million people have been trained by Heartstart UK in schools and the community.
- A gift of £140 to the BHF could pay for supply cover while a teacher trains as a Heartstart UK instructor.
Young life-savers
“One day at the end of the holidays Nan and Mum took me to Aberystwyth. Nan didn’t feel well during the day and when we got home to Nan’s and Mum left to take the car to the garage, Nan got much worse and had to lie down. I got her a cushion and ran to get her a glass of water.
When I came back I could see she was having chest pains because she had her arms crossed over her chest. I shouted “Don’t worry Nan ... I’m going to get help.” I was a bit scared but I knew to call 999 because of my life-saving lesson at school, so I tried to phone an ambulance, but when I got through I wasn’t sure which button to press.
I could tell Nan was in a lot of pain because her voice went very deep, so I phoned Mum and said to come quick. Mum rang an ambulance and I knew Nan was going to be all right when it arrived. I’m glad I knew what to do that day and I think more schools should take part in the BHF Heartstart UK programme so that lots of people can save their Nans.”
