Research
We raise vital funds for pioneering research that saves and
improves the lives of thousands of men, women and children in
Scotland and throughout the world.
The BHF is currently spending £25 million on over 150 research
projects across Scotland. This research is taking place in
universities, hospitals and research centres in Aberdeen, Glasgow,
Edinburgh, Dundee and St Andrews.
We have established a BHF Centre of Research
Excellence at the University of Edinburgh with funding of £7.6
million over six years.
The Charity contributed £5 million towards the BHF Glasgow
Cardiovascular Research Centre, which brings together
internationally renowned researchers in state-of-the-art
experimental and clinical facilities.
BHF Scotland also provides funding for life-saving
cardiac care equipment, including defibrillators, for
hospitals, GPs, emergency services, mountain rescue teams and other
qualified groups in the community.
The Highland Heartbeat Centre in Inverness,
part-funded by BHF Scotland, offers rehabilitation and research
facilities to greatly enhance support for cardiac patients across
the Highlands, an area with higher than average rates of heart
disease.
