Alcohol hospital admissions double in a decade

The number of people being admitted to hospital after drinking too much alcohol has more than doubled in the past decade, new statistics show.

Nearly 1.2 million people in England were admitted to casualty for injuries or illnesses caused by drinking in 2010/11 which is more than twice as many asalcohol in 2000/1. The figures for last year demonstrate an 11 percent increase on the previous 12 months.

Health Secretary Andrew Lansley says:

"The figures show that we have serious problems with both binge-drinking and long-term excessive alcohol abuse in a minority of people."

A new national alcohol strategy will be set out in 2012 outlining what further steps the government is taking to tackle this growing problem.
