Diabetes UK
Diabetes UK 's mission is to improve the lives of people with diabetes and work towards a world without diabetes.
The Measure Up campaign
The Measure Up campaign aims to raise awareness of the risk factors of diabetes and motivate those at risk to have a test for diabetes. The campaign urges people to take a quick waist measurement to check if they're at risk, alongside other risk factors including age, ethnicity and family history, as early diagnosis is crucial to avoid the complications. This campaign is crucial not only to identify those who currently have undiagnosed diabetes, but to inform future generations of the risks associated with diabetes and help prevent them developing it.
The UK-wide Measure Up campaign was launched in 2006, and following on from the success it was repeated in 2007 - both campaigns far exceeded expectations. The campaign directly influenced the numbers of people going to get tested for diabetes. It also greatly increased the numbers of people aware of the risk factors. QOF data showed that 70,000 more people were diagnosed with diabetes than in the previous year. In 2007 Asda tested 2,152 people and Tesco's tested 9,871 in their stores during the campaign period. 85% of healthcare professionals said they would use Measure Up in future. Since then the campaign has been rolled out by NHS London and NHS Stoke on Trent .
