New technologies

Example of a Cardia CT

New technologies such as cardiac CT (illustrated to the right) require significant training to ensure optimum image quality and avoid unnecessary radiation exposure to the patient. Much work needs to be done to provide this education across the UK both for CT and MRI. The utilisation of these techniques is essential to achieve anticipated imaging targets for many cardiac and vascular diseases including heart failure, ischaemic heart disease and congenital heart disease.

In addition, we need to continue to provide a firm research base to inform evidence-based practice and direct future commissioning.

Priorities

The field of cardiac imaging is growing rapidly with the development of new imaging techniques, and new applications for established techniques. The BSCI is the only multi-modality cardiac imaging group and has an important role to play in managing and co-ordinating this growth in the best interests of patients. Our priorities at present are to:

  • Provide education for cardiologists, radiologists and allied health professionals
  • Ensure the delivery of high quality cross-sectional imaging across the UK
  • Provide accreditation for individuals and units performing cardiac CT (computed tomography)
  • Work closely with the RCR and BCS and other imaging groups to establish a firm foundation for the evolution and delivery of cardiac imaging
  • Support research in cardiovascular imaging.
