Last year Arrhythmia Alliance (A-A) played a pivotal role in ensuring that one 61-year-old member received catheter ablation to help correct an irregular heart rhythm, atrial fibrillation. Atrial fibrillation is one of the leading causes of stroke, but is also associated with palpitations, heart failure and blackouts.

The patient was initially advised that they might be too old for the procedure and contacted A-A for support. Together, A-A worked with the individual's consultant to request that the PCT re-consider their decision for treatment.

The case was subsequently reviewed and following a short period, the PCT agreed to arrange the catheter ablation.
